INTRODUCTION TO
“THE LIGHTBULB SERIES”

Welcome to my latest set of blog posts, which I am calling “The Lightbulb Series.”

For pianists, a “lightbulb moment” comes when, after examining a work, its composition, and the factors influencing the composer, the pianist understands not only the message of the work, but the technique, interpretation, power and skill needed to share that message as fully as possible. Much more than just playing all the right notes, it is getting to the core of a work in order to convey its fullest and most profound meaning.

For me, I have the great honor of using essays written by Steinway Artist and Steinway & Sons Top Teacher of the Year Cosmo Buono, who has also been my teacher for the past six years, as the basis for this series.  As we examine what Mr. Cosmo has written, I will share with you how these ideas have become great sources of inspiration for me, while also allowing me to experience ways in which I think all pianists can make their playing more substantive and meaningful than ever before.

I hope this series will bring you as much joy, discovery, and insight as it has me, and that it leads to many of your own lightbulb moments.
