My Performance at Suntory Hall, Sunday, June 28, 2026
For every musician there are certain places that exist first in the imagination long before they become part of one's own story. Suntory Hall has always been one of those places for me. Long before I had the privilege of walking onto its stage, I knew it as one of the world's great concert halls, a place where many of the artists I most admired shared their music. It has welcomed legendary pianists, conductors, and orchestras from every corner of the world, and over the decades has earned a reputation not only for its extraordinary acoustics but also for the spirit of artistic excellence that fills the hall. To perform there is to become part of a tradition that has inspired generations of musicians.
What moves me most about Suntory Hall is that its greatness is not measured simply by its architecture or its remarkable sound. Rather, it is the atmosphere of complete respect for music. Every detail, from the warmth of its acoustics to the thoughtful design of the performance space, encourages artists to communicate honestly and naturally with their audiences. It is a hall that invites intimacy, allowing even the quietest musical moments to speak with remarkable clarity. For a pianist, this creates an environment in which one feels encouraged to take artistic risks, to search for beauty, and to trust that every nuance of expression can be heard.
Performing at Suntory Hall this coming Sunday also carries a deeply personal meaning for me because it represents a bridge between my musical life in Japan and the experiences that have shaped me abroad. As my artistic journey has taken me to stages in Europe and the United States, I have come to appreciate that every important concert hall possesses its own unique personality. Returning to Japan to perform at Suntory Hall allows me to bring home everything I have learned while remaining connected to the culture, traditions, and audiences that first nurtured my love of music. It reminds me that an artist's growth is never confined to one country or one stage, but is enriched by every performance and every encounter along the way.
