Remembering Ruth Slenczynska
When people think about the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, names like Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, and Van Cliburn often come to mind. Yet another remarkable artist deserves to be remembered alongside them: Ruth Slenczynska. Although she may not have become a household name, she was one of the most extraordinary musicians of her generation. Her career lasted more than ninety years, making her one of the longest-performing concert pianists in history, and she remained devoted to music until the very end of her life.
One of the things that made Ruth Slenczynska so unique was her connection to the great pianists of the past. She was the last surviving student of Sergei Rachmaninoff, giving her a direct link to one of the greatest composers and pianists who ever lived. She also studied with legendary teachers including Josef Hofmann, Artur Schnabel, and Alfred Cortot. Through them she inherited a musical tradition that stretched back to the nineteenth century, and she spent her life passing that tradition on to audiences and students alike.
She performed for US presidents including Herbert Hoover and John F. Kennedy, and was given distinguished awards by Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. She also once played a four-hand duet with Harry Truman. Whether she was playing Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, or Rachmaninoff, her performances were always guided by the composer's intentions rather than by showmanship alone.
The passing of Ruth Slenczynska is the loss of far more than a great pianist. It marks the end of a living connection to one of the most remarkable eras in classical music. Fortunately, her recordings, her writings, and the many students she inspired will continue to preserve her artistry for future generations. Her life reminds me that great musicians leave behind much more than beautiful performances—they leave a way of thinking about music that continues to inspire long after they are gone.
