LEON  FLEISHER (1928—2020)

Today we celebrate the birthday of one of the most inspiring pianists who ever lived, Leon Fleisher. He was born on July 23, 1928, and became one of the world's greatest concert pianists while he was still a young man. Then something happened that could have ended his career. A neurological condition called focal dystonia took away the use of his right hand, making it impossible for him to play much of the music he loved. Imagine spending your entire life preparing for something, only to have it suddenly taken away. Many people would have given up. Leon Fleisher chose a different path.

Instead of asking, "Why did this happen to me?" he asked, "What can I still do?" He discovered beautiful music written just for the left hand and continued performing, teaching, and sharing his love of music with others. He refused to believe that his future as a musician was over simply because his path had changed. That is a lesson every young musician can take to heart. Sometimes we cannot control what happens to us, but we can always choose how we respond.

After years of determination, medical treatment, and countless hours of work, Fleisher gradually regained the use of his right hand and returned to playing with both hands. His comeback was celebrated around the world, but what people admired most was not simply that he could perform again. It was the courage he showed during the years when no one knew if that day would ever come. His story reminds us that success is not about never facing difficulties. It is about refusing to let those difficulties stop you from growing.

As musicians, we all have moments when we feel discouraged. Maybe a piece isn't coming together, an audition doesn't go the way we hoped, or an injury forces us to take a break. During those times, I hope you will remember Leon Fleisher. His life teaches us that talent is important, but perseverance is even more powerful. The obstacles we face do not have to be the end of our story. Sometimes they become the very experiences that make us stronger artists and stronger people. That is why, nearly a century after his birth, Leon Fleisher continues to inspire musicians of every age—including me.
