Please Meet Ms. Mizuyo Uno, Pattern Maker

The top half of a muslin pattern created by Ms. Mizyuno Uno for one of the gowns, inspired by the shape of a fan.

It was a great pleasure for me to work with Ms. Uno on the gowns, and her skills as a pattern maker are truly amazing. As we were speaking she told me a little about herself, and I thought I would share the information with all of you.

“I am a pattern maker (in Italy, the term is modellista). While most of my regular work involves creating everyday garments, I have always had a deep love for dresses. I had the opportunity to learn extensively from artisans in the atelier of Gianfranco Ferré in Milan, which allowed me to develop strong expertise in this area.

I previously worked as a modellista for the Gianfranco Ferré collection line.

For this particular dress, the construction begins with a corset forming the foundation of the bodice. On top of this base, the design is built through draping, incorporating elements inspired by a fan (ventaglio). The upper section intentionally leaves certain areas slightly lifted, creating movement reminiscent of a flower. This adds depth and gives the dress a three-dimensional appearance.

The skirt features a bold flared silhouette with a mountain-like dye pattern for strong visual impact. In addition, the pleats at the left front of the skirt are designed to flow seamlessly from the fan-inspired elements of the bodice.”
