My First Fitting for the Gowns

From top left: The two muslin versions of the gowns; me taking a look at the pattern for one of the gowns; the incredible team of designers, Ms. Mizuyo Uno, pattern maker, Mr. Masaru Naruse, fabric dyer, and Mr. Katsuya Ooe, who designed the gowns.

This past Sunday I went for my first fitting of the gowns I will be wearing for my Carnegie Hall and Suntory Hall concerts, which was an exciting and wonderful experience.

When one first comes into the atelier what he sees are the patterns for the dresses, which have been made out of muslin.  All of my measurements had been taken at an earlier meeting, so this was a fitting to determine that the patterns were correct before the actual fabric is cut.

When you are surrounded by so many wonderful creative people it is hard not to feel a bit like a princess. I am however greatly honored and humbled to be the recipient of so much wonderful creativity, and it is very inspiring to watch three such experienced people at work.

I was also very happy to have my father, mother, and grandmother as part of the fitting, as they have always supported my career every step of the way.  My heart is filled with so much joy and gratitude as I get closer and closer each day to the concerts.

I will tell all of you a little secret.  The fabrics for the gowns are part of a wonderful story, which I will save for later.  In the meantime, please continue to check back as I share even more about the making of the dresses and the wonderful creative process associated with it.
