Mozart, Piano Sonata No. 13 in B-flat major, K. 333 (315c), iii. Allegretto grazioso

PIANO SONATA NO. 13, MOZART, 0712-2025, iii. (Allegretto grazioso)

With this movement it is almost as if Mozart has decided to say “All right. Let’s bring everything home.” The sense of completion in the movement, as well as the related joy, is almost like the discussion of people who have been out to a fine meal in the first two movements, and they are talking about all of the wonderful food as they walk home, happy and satisfied.

There is for me then, a sense of fulfillment here that not only is meant to round out the work, but to also celebrate the delight and majesty of the first two movements.

Some musicologists have written that the cadenza recalls some of Mozart’s concerto writing, but what I have worked to do is to make this portion of the movement a way of bringing together all of the other melodic components of the piece, not unlike tying a bow around a wonderful present.

Are you a fan of Mozart’s sonatas, or are there other types of his compositions you prefer?  Please let me know in the Comments.  Thanks so much!
