What I’ll Be Wearing—and Why
When you’re away from home for three months and have to make sure you are appropriately dressed for any number of occasions and throughout an entire day, there is a lot of thinking that goes into what gets put into your suitcase. I am learning to come up with certain things that will serve me over the entire period of such a long trip, and I am happy to share some of my ideas with my fellow travelers, whether you are going away on a study and concert tour like me, or just planning an extended vacation with friends.
First of all, always make sure you have clothes that are versatile. By that I mean things that will let you be gone all day and still look nice whether you have to attend an event or just go to a studio to practice. You might not always be able to get back to your room or hotel to change. To accomplish that I like to pack what I call a few “statement pieces” like the coat you see pictured here.
I’ll be arriving in New York in the spring, which means that the temperature could fluctuate—a lot. Just today, for example, as I am writing this, the high temperature there is going to be 80° F (26° Celsius), and the next day the high is going to be 55°F (12° C).
With temperature changes like that, and the evenings being significantly cooler than the days, I always like to have a coat with me so that I can be sure I don’t get too cold. It’s always easy to carry it if it’s warmer, but I also think that, as Mr. Alexander says, “it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”
This coat, with its bright green color, is also a great way for me to welcome in spring. I also like the peony pink bag, which picks up on the spring like color of the coat as well, because together they make me feel very happy when I walk down the streets of New York on my way to lessons, practice sessions, and rehearsals. Also, a statement coat like this one is a way to keep warm, as well as a practical way to be stylish whether you’re casually dressed, or on your way to a special event.
If you would like to see more of the selections I have chosen for this trip, just contact me, and I will be happy to share some more photos. Thanks!
