THE LIGHTBULB SERIES
MOTIVATION VERSUS DISCIPLINE
You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.
—Zig Ziglar
There seems to always be a lot of talk about practice, and how to do it effectively. What’s more, many people talk about how to stay motivated to practice every day.
Here is The Lightbulb Moment for me. Motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what makes for real progress.
There may be days when you are not motivated to practice. That is normal. There is nothing wrong with that.
Discipline, on the other hand is what is needed to grow. To become your best self. To find out all of which you are capable.
A person might not want to water a garden every day or pull the weeds from around the plants. Without those things however, the garden can never reach its fullest potential.
As an artist your daily practice sessions are part of your building your artistry. It is what you do to turn what you are into who you want to become.
Don’t think of practice then as a burden or a chore. Think of it as a means of self-discovery. A method for uncovering your potential. How the flowers in a garden become tall and strong.
Don’t wait to be motivated to practice. Practice instead to discover the best that it is in you.
