This week I am releasing some videos from my Tokyo performance last month.
This first work, Étude No. 4, “Embraceable You” by George Gershwin and Earl Wild, is actually a transcription Wild made of the original Gershwin song. I actually performed this as an encore at the recital, even though I am using it to start this series.
You might remember that I also performed this piece at the Annual Student Recital of the Alexander & Buono Academy in June, and wrote about it in my blog post of June 24, 2025.
I feel very strongly this is a work where one has to keep in mind all of the lyrics in order for the transcription to be fully appreciated. One must also savor every note of each measure in order to figure out all the components of the work and how they blend together.
Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you.
Embrace me, you irreplaceable you.
Just one look at you my heart grew tipsy in me.
You and you alone bring out the gypsy in me.
I love all the many charms about you.
Above all I want my arms about you.
Don't be a naughty baby...
Come to papa come to papa do.
My sweet embraceable you...
As you can see, my performance of the work in June is different from that of July, because I have had more time to think about the piece, ideas on how to perform it, and how best to express everything both Gershwin and Wild put into it.
Please tell me in the Comments the differences you notice in interpretation. Thank you for your help. This will allow me to develop my interpretation even more.
