A Wealth of Christmas Music
ROW 1: From left to right:” The Evening Prayer”, by Engelbert Humperdinck, from his opera Hansel und Gretel, sung by Kathleen Battle, Soprano, and Frederica von Stade, Mezzo Soprano; Kathleen Battle singing the Mozart motet “Exsultate, jubilate”; the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, performed by The English Concert & Choir; “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen, sung by VOCES 8
ROW 2: From left to right: The Tölzer Knabechor in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Weihnachtsoratorium, BWV 248); Joan Sutherland singing selected Christmas carols; Malakai Bayoh and Aled Jones in “O Holy Night”; Juan Diego Floréz, “Panis Angelicus”
Although I tend to focus attention on the Christmas music written for the piano, as you might imagine, there is a wealth of Christmas music written for voice, chorus, and of course, other instruments.
Above are a few suggestions. Some of them may be familiar to you, but some you may be hearing for the first time.
Enjoy!
