A Night at the Opera, Part Two
As much fun as it was to watch Aïda on the screen, it was also a lot of fun deciding what I was going to wear. The singers might be wearing costumes, but the audience members also have a chance to decide how they want to look as listeners as well.
For that performance I chose wear a dress which had a pink and blue top with a black skirted bottom, and a “Nile blue” organza coat that went over it.
I chose this outfit because Act III of the opera takes place on the banks of the Nile River at night, when the stars shine brightly, and beneath the moon the water looks like it’s blue.
I was also inspired by the production pictures of Angel Blue and the costume she was wearing (see Part One of this post). I thought her blue costume was wonderful, and it was the inspiration for my own choice as an audience member. I must confess that what I was wearing made the performance even more meaningful for me, as I felt I was somehow a part of it.
Notice too I was not wearing any make-up. Not only was I sitting in a dark theater, but with the story of the opera being such a sad one, I didn’t know if I would end up crying!
